Pfizer, Inc. New York, N.Y. celebrated a victory in early May of 2006; they were able to receive approval for their newest smoking cessation prescription drug Chantix. Chantix FDA approval means that now, after all the patches and gum you’ve ever tried, there is truly something that really works! REALLY!
Chantix FDA approval was granted after a “rush” through the approval process. This was able to occur because of Pfizer’s claims that the active ingredient in Chantix, varenicline tartrate, had been proven to have other health benefits to the general public. Knowing that cigarette smoking is among the nation’s top causes of cancers of the lungs, throat and other respiratory organs, Pfizer’s Chantix FDA approval was a small success in a great fight against the enemy.
The Chantix FDA approval was based on the fact that the drug interacts with the receptors that are responsible for stimulating dopamine, the “pleasure” hormone that tells the brain smoking is enjoyable. With the desire to repeat that feeling, people who have nicotine addictions are not able to ever stop smoking successfully. The large majority of people who are unable to stop smoking have developed a nicotine addiction and nothing short of “kicking the addiction” will help. Chantix helps the chemical causes to be rerouted. In addition to blocking the effects nicotine has on the brain, Chantix also eases the withdrawal symptoms by providing some nicotine effects in very limited doses. When this prescription hit the market in June of 2006, doctors were prescribing it more than any other smoking cessation therapy.
While the normal course of therapy according to the Chantix FDA approval, is a twelve week program in which patients decrease the amount of cigarettes they smoke per day in succession. At the end of the twelve week program, patients who have successfully stopped smoking may continue the treatment for another twelve weeks to ensure success.

It is important to tell your doctor about any other medications that you might be taking; whether over the counter or prescription. As Chantix may interact with other medications, if you have liver or kidney problems or receive dialysis treatments, tell your doctor. If you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant, make sure to stop taking the drug and notify your doctor. As you begin to stop smoking, there may be negative side effects that are experienced. Many of these are common and must be tolerated during the cessation period. With time, these side effects will diminish and eventually go away. Some of these may include nausea, vomiting, headache and dry mouth. If you experience any of these symptoms or suspect that an overdose has been taken, it is important that you notify your doctor immediately.
With the FDA’s approval of the active ingredient in Chantix, it is only a matter of time before Pfizer introduces the health sector to varenicline tartrate’s other healing properties. With the overall potential good Pfizer has demonstrated, they may win another small battle in the war against health problems.
